LOCAL RIDES

Local ride information is noted below. If you don't see one listed, or if you'd like to find a local recumbent rider to ride with, please feel free to email the editor at fun@rcutah.com.

Bent Bike Boogies

  • What are they? Informal rides for bent riders to associate together, although other cyclist are certainly welcome. These are unsupported rides - which means bring your own water and snacks. The rides are usually 15 to 25 miles and the pace is whatever you want it to be. Some will want to race along. Others would rather kick back in their recumbent seats and enjoy the scenery while they mosey along. No matter what pace you want to ride, there will probably be someone else there to keep you company, if you want it. In fact, most kept an easy-going pace so we could stay together and enjoy visiting during the scenic ride. All the selected routes offer bathroom and picnic facilities along the way. So come join with other recumbent enthusiasts. They make great friends.
  • In 2006 there were three Bent Bike Boogies. Again there were three in 2007. We rode the Jordan River Parkway Trail in northern Utah County between Thanksgiving Point and Utah Lake. The second Boogie was the Provo River Parkway Trail from the mouth of Provo Canyon to Vivan Park. The last Bent Bike Boogie was to enjoy the Autumn colors - we rode from Heber City Park through Midway to Soldier Hollow. Here is a photo at the top of Soldier Hollow with some of the riders from the last Bent Bike Boogie in 2006:

  • 2008 Schedule (by the way, if it is raining, snowing or otherwise doing things to make cycling unpleasant, we won't be doing it) - all Boogies start at 8:00 a.m.:
    • Bent Bike Boogie #7 - Saturday, June 21, 2008   PLEASE NOTE THIS RIDE IS CANCELLED UNTIL THEY REOPEN THE PATH THAT IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION!!         Ride the Jordan River Parkway Trail between Utah Lake and Thanksgiving Point.   This trail is fairly flat, with some rolling hills near Thanksgiving Point. The trail runs along side the Jordan River. Enjoy seeing the Thanksgiving Point Gardens from the back side. And stop for a few minutes to watch the radio control airplanes flying at the RC Airport near Utah Lake's north shore. Willow Park in Lehi is about midway on the trail with restrooms and picnic areas. We'll start at Willow Park and ride north to Thanksgiving Point, back past Willow Park to Utah Lake on the south, then back north to Willow Park again. The trail crosses a couple of roads, but otherwise avoids all automobile traffic. The ride is about 18 miles, but since we're starting near the mid-point on the trail, you can do about half the ride if you don't want to do the entire distance. (Link to Jordan River Parkway Trail in Utah County)
    • Bent Bike Boogie #8 - Saturday, July 19, 2008        Ride the Provo River Parkway Trail between Utah Lake and Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. This trail is a favorite for cyclists to ride. It runs near the Provo River for most of the route, and avoids traffic almost completely. It even has tunnels under most of the roads as it follows the river through Provo. The scenery is breathtaking in Provo Canyon and on the southern end of the trail near Utah Lake. This trail is popular with walkers, joggers and board riders, which gives us the opportunity to offer a friendly hello as we cruise along. The ride is about 30 miles, but since we're starting near the mid-point on the ride, you can do about half the ride if you don't want to do the entire distance.  (Link to map of the Provo River Parkway Trail in Utah County)
    • Bent Bike Boogie #9 - Saturday, September 20, 2008          Ride from Heber City park to Soldier Hollow and back. Enjoy the Autumn colors on this ride through picturesque Wasatch County. This ride is on a bike trail, or on back rural roads with little traffic. The mile long climb to Soldier Hollow is not terribly steep; and the view from the top is beautiful, especially in the Fall. And then there's the one mile descent back into Midway - well, what can we say, if you have the need for speed, this section won't disappoint you. We'll start at Heber City Park, head west on the bike trail to Midway, then head south on the back roads to Soldier Hollow, then return to Heber City Park. The total distance of this shorter ride is about 13 miles. It can be stretched to 15 or 16 miles by taking a jount through Midway on the way back.       (Link to map of Heber City, Midway and Soldier Hollow)
