Recumbent Cycles of Utah Staff:

Russ and Tammy - Owners
Russ fell in love with recumbents after purchasing a RANS Tailwind. During the his first year of riding that great recumbent bike, he began researching and became fascinated with tadpole trikes. He purchased his first tadpole trike, a SUN EZ-3 Tadpole, from a local bike shop owner, Mike at the Bike Barn in Lehi. Through the years Mike became a good friend not only to Russ, but to recumbent enthusiasts in general. As Russ rode about town, folks often stopped him to ask where he got his unique bike or trike.

As a businessman and entrepreneur, an idea for a bike shop that specialized in recumbent bikes and trikes started for formulate. Russ convinced the fine folks at RANS Bikes and WizWheelz TerraTrikes to take a chance and let Russ carry their product lines. The business started in Russ and Tammy's garage. Through the years more fine manufacturers of recumbent bikes and trikes were added to their product mix. Russ affectionately referred to Recumbent Cycles of Utah as his hobby business, the one he was most passionate about. Tammy liked having it based in the garage because that meant Russ would actually be home sometimes. She liked it, that is, until it threatened to take over the entire three-car garage. For some strange reason she didn't relish the thought of having to park in the driveway rather than in the garage when the Utah winter snow started flying. Go figure.

It was time to turn the hobby business into a real one that could stand on its own. After a search that spanned nine months and hours spent examining dozens of possible locations, Russ and Tammy found a location for a retail store that they thought would be suitable. It was easy to find and get to from the freeway, and it was in a nice but fairly quiet shopping center. There was a large parking lot without tons of traffic where folks could take a quick test ride. It was also located with easy access to residential neighborhoods so customers could take longer rides as they narrowed down which bike or trike was their favorite.

With their other business and professional commitments, Russ and Tammy pulled together the excellent Recumbent Cycles of Utah team to help customers explore the world of recumbent cycling.

Russ and Tammy still love riding their recumbent tadpole trikes and often sneak away to explore new trails. Two of their favorites are the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes across the Idaho panhandle, and the Snow Canyone Loop Trail in Saint George, Utah. The Snow Canyon Loop Trail is now the traditional early Spring Bent Bike Boogie.

Luke - Assistant Manager
Luke has managed to live in an interesting array of places. West Virginia, Virginia, Wyoming, Utah, Alaska, Hawai'i, Germany, and Latvia have all been home to him at one time or another. He and his wife love to travel, and have been to over 60 countries between the two of them.
Luke loves the outdoors as well. Hiking, camping, snowshoeing, fishing, etc. He volunteers as an Assistant Scoutmaster for a local troop. Between Scouts and his own personal camping trips, he usually averages 14 nights of camping a year, as well as numerous hikes and treks.
Outside of work and Scouting, Luke is a racquetball fanatic. It borders on obsession, really.
He has tried to keep his list of occupations as varied as his list of previous residences. Luke worked in the warehouse of a souvenir store, as the assistant to a general contractor, as an over-the-phone customer service representative (yeeha), and a pedi-cab driver. He even worked as a ranch hand on a cattle ranch in Wyoming. As the assistant manager of Recumbent Cycles of Utah, this is the second time he has been able to put his love of biking to good use.
He spent two summers in Alaska as the manager of a bicycle-taxi company, working 40 hours a week in the saddle. Right now, Luke averages between 16 and 38 miles a day while he commutes to and from work. He is currently training for a triathlon and loves his job!
He originally wrote this in first-person, but was informed that it would look more professional in third-person. So he rewrote it.

Hyrum -

Hyrum’s cycling passion began when at 14 years old and as a Varsity Scout his troop went on a week long, 300 mile bike trek around the Eastern Caldera Rim in the High Desert of central Oregon.  He discovered that cycling was another wonderful way to push himself physically while enjoying the natural beauties of Oregon, Utah, and Colorado.  As an endurance athlete he has also participated in Oregon’s “Hood to Coast” (a 196 mile running relay race from Mt. Hood to Seaside, Or) and is an avid triathlete.  His current triathlon training program has him cycling at least 40 miles a week.  Hyrum is also perusing a degree in Exercise Science at BYU and hopes to be a Physical Therapist one day.

Jake -
His whole life Jake has been drawn to the mechanics of how things are put together and how things work. He loves to assemble things and fix things.  He also has a huge passion for outdoor activity such as mountain and road biking.  That’s why he loves working at Recumbent Cycles of Utah, doing what he loves to do most.

When he moved from Chicago IL to Alpine Utah, he immediately feel in love with the great outdoors.  He has done lots of mountain biking throughout Utah. Trails such as Slick Rock in Moab Utah, or biking in Yellow Stone are some of the rides that he has done.  He loves to ride the recumbent trikes.  Jake also participates in drum line at Lone Peak High School, and loves to play sports.
